Volvo Truck with Banksy's Art Expected to Bring up to $2 Million at Auction

  • How much is a used box truck worth? In this case, it could be up to $2 million because the celebrated but mysterious artist Banksy decorated the side.
  • The graffiti-style artwork on what's called Turbo Zone Truck dates to 2000, according to the Bonhams auction house.
  • The truck goes on the block on September 14 as part of the Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction.

Perhaps the most expensive box truck in the world could be sold for as much as $2 million later this month. How is this remotely possible? you may be asking. It is, after all, just a box truck. That's where you're wrong. It’s not just a 1988 Volvo FL6 truck. It's a rolling piece of artwork hand-painted by renowned contemporary artist Banksy.

The truck is slated to roll across the auction block on September 14 as part of the Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction. The official name of the piece is a mouthful: Turbo Zone Truck (Laugh Now but One Day We'll Be in Charge). Laugh at the name, but not at the price, as the truck is expected to rake in between $1.3 million and $2 million.

The Volvo truck is the largest work from the artist, who painted it in 2000 in his famous graffiti-esque style. Bonhams states that "Taking the vehicle of the laborer, the workman, and the blue-collar employee as his blank canvas, the present motorcar and work of art revels in Banksy's raw and unfiltered wit; a masterclass of the artist's satirical humour and impressive dexterity with spray paint." We'd have to agree with Bonhams' assessment; it's somewhat ironic that a box truck sells for the equivalent of a Ferrari LaFerrari.

This isn't the first commercial vehicle painted by Banksy, either; he also painted one known as SWAT Van, which sold for the equivalent of $263,874 at a 2016 Bonhams auction, so it's conceivable that the projected $2 million sale price is a bit inflated, but these are strange times. Who would've ever thought the most expensive Volvo to be sold would be a 1988 FL6? Definitely not us.
